Giuliana Rancic Should Not Be On The Red Carpet, Or TV, For That Matter

Giuliana Rancic does red carpet coverage for awards shows for the E! Network. I think that she should be removed from it. She has a sick obsession with diets, weight, and bodies of the celebrities that she interviews. She’s promoting and reinforcing an unhealthy body image ideal, not just in terms of the comments she makes to the celebrities, but also with her own body.

People like her are dangerous for women to be watching, because she just reinforces all of those stereotypes. In fact, I think that she may have an eating disorder of her own, which, while not uncommon in Hollywood, is not usually as apparent as hers may be. Her obsession with health, working out, weight, and dieting is not something she tries to hide, and in fact consumes much of what she discusses.
At the Golden Globes this year, she asked almost every celebrity about their diets (video at the link).

The “Fashion Police” coverage consisted of her body-snarking celebs left and right. Again, there’s video at the link, but here are some highlights:
“White is wear it’s at on the red carpet, IF you’ve got the figure– if you’re thin enough.”

Patricia Arquette is a “not a medium, she’s a grande.”

At the Grammys, she interviewed Kathy Griffin, and this conversation took place:

“How are you getting this body?” asked Giuliana.

“It’s frustration and starvation,” said Kathy. “I’m cranky all the time and I’m hungry all the time.”

“You look good, that’s all that matters,” said Giuliana.

Yes, that’s all that matters. Forget the fact that Kathy is hungry, cranky, and probably unhealthy. The only thing that matters is that she LOOKS GOOD! And looking good=being thin. That sounds a lot like that quote from Kate Moss: “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.” No, of course it doesn’t.

I wouldn’t be surprised if her well-publicized struggles to conceive are related to her low body weight. If you follow her on Twitter, you very quickly realize that the majority of her tweets are workout or diet tips. In fact, she posted her meal plan on her website, and, uh, the bitch doesn’t eat. To summarize:

Breakfast: 1 grapefruit, egg white omelet with veggies

Snack: Kashi TLC bar

Lunch: Apple, chicken breast (no skin), steamed broccoli

Snack: Kashi TLC bar

Dinner: grilled chicken breast OR sushi, veggies

Liquid: I drink a 16 oz bottle of water with lemon and a pinch of cayenne pepper in it. Sip hot green or oolong tea 2 cups. GT’s Kombucha in Citrus or Gingerade flavor. Sip on Muscle Power.

This is not a healthy diet plan to be promoting! But wait! If you need to lose pounds FAST, she promotes a cleanse:
The E! News anchor lost seven pounds before her 2007 wedding by using the The Ultimate Tea Diet. She had to drink four cups of tea each day and eat three light meals, like chicken breast and steamed vegetables.

Also not healthy. And not worth the torture over SEVEN pounds! Giving soundbites like this in a magazine spread that’s supposed to be about your favorite beauty products? Also fucking absurd:

“If I’ve had way too much sodium the night before, my makeup artist contours with blush. Sometimes I make my nose a little trimmer, too.”

YES, GOD FORBID YOU HAVE A FAT NOSE. But the thing is, instead of talking about all the sacrifices she makes to be thin, and how worth it they are, people should notice all the work that goes into looking like that. If being that thin was natural or healthy, it wouldn’t require her to have such a strict meal plan, to work out as obsessively as she does, and to make her life revolve around keeping the weight off. She actually acknowledges this, when she talks about “cheat food” in her meal plan:

CHEAT FOOD
Of course I cheat sometimes (I’m human, after all) but i try to limit the cheating to once a week and once I cheat, i don’t say “Oh to hell with it, I’ve cheated so now i’m gonna stuff my face and get back on track tomorrow.” This is a terrible and dangerous attitude and something I used to do all the time. Instead, now I will enjoy the “cheat” food by having a little bit of it and giving the rest away. For instance, if i just MUST have pasta, I will let my husband order it and have some bites of his. Or I will order a healthy dish and ask for a half order of the pasta (no cream, ever!) on the side. I will eat half of the side of pasta and pass the rest around the table so my friends can try it to. That way you are impressing the table with your generosity and cutting lots of calories:) I know this is easier said than done but it all depends on how badly you want to change your eating habits and the way you look.

This just reinforces that thin is more important than healthy, or happy, or satisfied. Somebody, please get her some help, and get her OFF the red carpets.

Thank you!!! Hearing her on the red carpet makes me want to rip my hair out!!! When I heard her exchange with Kathy Griffin I wanted to throw my remote at the tv. Kathy Griffin is obviously a comedian and I even found humor in her comment, but JR's response had me floored.

I know that JR had [has?] a show with her hubby, I can only imagine what she talks about there.

She is insane and I agree, perpetuates the thin culture that is so detrimental to our society.

Does she not usually "let" her husband order pasta?

    Oy.

I am working on losing weight so that I'm no longer classified as obese, and hell, my trainer has me on a 1,200-1,500 calories-per-day plan. He says it's UNHEALTHY to go below 1,200 calories in a day.

This woman obviously has disordered eating and body image issues. Damn.

"But the thing is, instead of talking about all the sacrifices she makes to be thin, and how worth it they are, people should notice all the work that goes into looking like that."

I thought the same thing. It seems like there is nothing in her life other than being thin and talking about how other people look. Pretty pathetic.
I am kind of intrigued by how in the US, a highly unrealistic skinny beauty standard seems to coexist with widespread obesity. I wonder about the social effects of this. My guess would be that such a high maintenance beauty standard lets appearance work as a status symbol. If you have the status and spare time and money to spend on looking according to standard, it sens a clear signal that you belong to the upper classes.

I find her attitude and her body to be disgusting. Neither are healthy in the least. And I think Patricia Arquette is beautiful. Snark, snark, snark! Such a waste of space they all are.

Violence on oneself. How fun and good life is. Meh. The woman needs serious fucking therapy.Imagine if she placed her energy in something that was good for herself and just one other person…

I don't watch TV so I've never seen this girl, and I'm glad I haven't as she would piss me off as most of the crap on TV does (sexism, racism, violence, stupidity.. turn that thing off!)..
She sounds pathetic and negative, and since most people don't turn the tv off I guess damage control could be made by removing her from the screen.

Hey, why don't you print this blog entry and mail it to E! Network?

Now, excuse me, I need to go have a look in the mirror to see if all that sodium I ate last night made my nose fat.

This makes me so angry. Thank you Britni for so consistently celebrating women of different sizes, different shapes, different origins. It makes your blog all the more subversive to me.

I thought it was weird that all of the women they said were fat were actually pretty slender, they just had big boobs or more curve to their hips. Having big boobs myself, I know that wearing certain cuts on top will make you look larger, but I don't understand how having big boobs makes you a big girl.

And it pissed me off when they were talking about that woman from The View wearing white and how she should have worn long sleeves. Because she's a fat cow and she should cover up all that fatty fat skin, right? She was gorgeous.

I knew there was a reason I don't watch red carpet shows and I've always hated Julianna because she's annoying.

Ugh. I always thought she looked a little like ET (all head, no neck) and I guess this is why. She just doesn't eat.

I totally agree, she shouldn't be on television and she should probably get some counseling.

What are you talking about? All thin people are healthy silly. And all fat people are obese and should hide in their houses. We can’t allow all those fatties to feel anything but shame when they dare to clothe themselves. We should also blame obesity on proud fatties. If thin women can’t be comfortable in their beautifully toned skin then we can’t allow anyone else to either.

God, this is why I love you. This woman disgusts me!

First, I am on a lifestyle change, not interested in necessarily being skinny, but I am extremely interested in being HEALTHY!

Second, I am an addictive personality and when I start seeing the scale drop I get addicted to the feeling and "taste" of what the thin feeling can bring. Accomplishment, reward of hard work, pride, etc.

Third, I want to conceive, eventually and one of the reasons I'm getting healthy is so that I can someday achieve this goal. Doctors have always told me I need to "get skinny," or "be thinner" to make babies (only my last ob/gyn suggested I "get healthy"). This is not true, I don't need to be thin, but I do NEED to be healthy. Huge difference. Healthy is fabulous, but looking good in my clothing will be icing on the cake!

I guess I say all that to say this, women like me, average women looking to get healthy, need healthy role models. We don't need a woman like her reinforcing the ugly stereotypes that already exist.

Basically, she's a douche. And if I'm gonna eat pasta, healthy or not, give me some fucking cream!

This fills me with such hate.

And the last time a diet clinic tried to put me on a very low call diet….around 1200-1300, I was not only miserable but SICK. Even though some may argue that Weight Watchers doesn't teach you enough how to eat without counting points, they do at least get the point across that you CAN go too low, and 1200 is too damn low for those of us at 250 or more. 1200 isn't the be-all end-all diet number.

the body needs so much more than this moron is giving herself. she's just going to break in half one of these days.
