I'm nothing but a brash and impetuous girl striving to be true to myself while searching for somewhere to belong, someone to love, and a better version of me.
As I’ve discussed before, The L Word has done wonders when it comes to breaking barriers and expanding ideas about what is acceptable on television. And while The L Word has broken ground in many ways, much of the lesbian sex portrayed on the show is quite unrealistic.
Without even going into the absence of butch characters, the only transgendered character’s weak storyline, and other unrealistic social aspects of the show, the sex scenes leave something to be desired. I’m not necessarily complaining here. Trust me, I love me some lesbians gettin’ busy, and I will take any of it I can get. Especially on mainstream televison. These are just some of the things I’ve observed over the course of the show.
Most of the time, the women actually look like the are fucking (the way that heterosexual couples “fuck”); but you know neither one of them has a dick. How does that work, then? Many of the positions the women are in just don’t make sense. It’s one of those if-she-has-those-parts-and-she-has-those-parts… then how…? Or a wait-a-second-if-I-tried-doing-that-it-would-never-work-like-that. Or even a what-exactly-is-she-touching?
There are rarely scenes in which women go down on each other (or in which cunnilingus is even suggested by the position). The sex (and positions) look very much like the positions shown in most sex scenes on TV in movies. However, in most TV shows, the couples are heterosexual. Most of those positions are not going to work for two women becasuse, let’s face it: they have diferent parts.
Another issue I have is the lack of discussion about and use of sex toys among the women on the show. While it is true that not all lesbian couples use strap-ons, a large number of them do. To not even mention their use is unrealistic, as they make up at least a decent part of many lesbians’ sex lives.
Now, in season 2, Dana and Alice go shopping for a strap-on together. Dana even purchases one. And this, in itself, is progress. However, we never actually see the dildo (in the sex scene), nor do we see Dana “using” that dildo on Alice. So, while the mention of the strap-on was a step in the right direction, the show still shied away from what they probably thought America would deem “too offensive.”*
Below is that clip, from episode 209, entitled Late, Later, Latent (NSFW):
And while part of me wishes that they hadn’t made the two women so embarrassed while shopping for the toy
(because so many lezzies use them! It’s okay, really!), it fit with Dana’s character and you have to love her for this moment (aw, I miss Dana!):
AND, the priceless scene when Alice and Dana’s luggage gets searched at the airport (in episode 210, entitled Land Ahoy. And the only time we actually see their strap-on!). Poor Dana.
But, I digress.
Back to my point. Finally people, there is progress! In this week’s episode, not only did Jenny buy Niki a strap-on, not only do they show the actual dildo attachment, but they actually show the two girls using the toy!
And, even better (as Babeland pointed out), the girls remembered the lube (yay for safer sex!).
Clip below, from episode 510 entitled Lifecycle (I probably don’t have to tell you, but its also NSFW) This scene is HOTTT:
This episode even had the straight girl going down on the big ol’ les (!!) in the most graphic oral sex scene I remember on the show:
It’s awesome to see the show’s creators finally showing different kinds of lesbian sex without apologizing for it. Because there is a large variety of lesbian sex (as there is hetero sex). Showing a greater range of sexual practices among lesbians legitimizes them and, especially when the scenes are THAT hot, makes them something that people will want to emulate. And they should.
Now, bring on the fisting, I say!
*It is at this point that I must mention a scene in episode 409 (I think. I couldn’t figure out the exact episode). Max, the transgender character hooks up with a girl named Grace. In the scene, Max has either a strap-on or a soft pack in his pants and Grace proceeds to put it into her mouth and treat it like it is part of Max’s body. I must commend the writers/staff of The L Word for that. It may have made much of the general population uncomfortable, but it was a monumental scene in calling attention to a trans issue. Especially having a character like Grace, who is so accepting and sensitive to the issue and can make Max feel sexy and comfortable in his new body (with or without all the “necessary” parts). End tangent.
