Why do race relations of any form bring out the ignorance in people?
My Fox News loving coworker: ”Everyone keeps calling Obama the “first black president.” But he’s not. He’s HALF black. And I think he is ashamed of his white side. He’s ashamed to be white.
CB: “Was [the inauguration] everything you had hoped for?”
Me: “Yes. I cried lots and lots.”
CB: “You are overdramatic.”
Me: “No I’m not. Lots of my friends cried and popped champagne and had parties.”
CB: “I didn’t know you had lots of black friends now”
…
CB: “Anyway, did you hear about the present Bush left for Obama?”
Me: “?”
CB: “Two new frialators in the kitchen. I also heard there are plans to fund 2000 new KFCs around the country.”
Sigh. And 2/3 of black people think that we have achieved Martin Luther King’s dream. Yeah, right.

Someone here in the UK asked if Obama was running in Kenya if they would be calling him a white president?!
My boyfriend's (for how much longer?!?) brother: "After Obama is president, I better not hear any black people bitching about anything anymore. And no more affirmative action." Something like that, more "frustrated" sounding than mean-spirited.
The hilarious part is that I doubt he even knows a black person, so where is he hearing this supposed "bitching?"
sreiously, I see how ignorant this coworker is. I still laughed so hard when I got to the frialators and the KFC part. My friends and I have supported obama since the primaries, we do realize it's a long way to go before MLK's dream come true. However, we still make a lot of similar jokes, and it's our sense of humor, nothing mean-spirited or racist. I just wish Chappelle was not in retirement, he'd be the best guy to make us laugh in these situations.
Wow. That makes me sick to my stomach. And whoever you are anonymous, sorry, but that type of behavior (telling racial jokes) IS racist, no matter what you believe your intent is.
