Is He or Isn’t He (And Why Does It Matter)?

The speculation regarding Adam Lambert’s sexuality does not appear to be going away any time soon. When asked upfront about it, Adam says:

I want to just get this question out of the way first, something that’s been dangling a bit over you for the whole season: Would you like to put to rest all the speculation about your sexuality?
“It’s not dangling over my head. [Laughing] It may be dangling over yours, but it’s not over mine. Yeah, I think speculation keeps things really interesting.”

So you don’t want to say anything one way or the other?
“Like I said, I think speculation keeps things very, very interesting.”

There was also the incident with the TMZ paps, in which a paparazzi says to him, “You could be the first American Idol winner… um…,” to which Adam responded, “The first what? The first… friend of you?”

But apparently, people aren’t content to just leave well enough alone. For some reason, people are determined to make Adam’s sexuality their business. A few weeks ago, Entertainment Weekly ran a cover story on Adam with the title, “Loving Adam Lambert: The Most Exciting American Idol Contestant In Years* (*And Not Just Because He Might Be Gay).” Sigh. You’re damn right that the speculation regarding his sexuality isn’t the only (or main) reason that Adam was an exciting contestant.

Then, EW turned around and ran this piece, basically saying that unless Adam is ‘out’ that he isn’t a role model that is showing people that it’s okay to be yourself. And then Kara DioGuardi (the sucky new judge they added this season) went on The View and basically outed him herself, saying,
“I don’t think he was ever [in the closet]… I think he was always openly out.”

Kara, honey, even if he is out in his life, to his friends and to his family, he hasn’t publicly come out to the world yet. If he decides he doesn’t want to, that’s his choice. IT IS NOT YOUR CHOICE TO MAKE FOR HIM. She should never have said that, unless Adam was the one to say it publicly first. Not her place AT ALL.
Is Adam gay? Probably. Should it matter? No. But apparently it does. For his part, Adam seems pretty comfortable with his sexuality, whatever it may be. There were the pictures of him making out with men and dressed in drag which Adam deemed “not embarrassing.” There was the performance of Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” with the emphasis on the line, “And I told them about equality and it’s true you’re either wrong or you’re right.” There was the really moving performance of “A Change Is Gonna Come.” And then, there’s this Idolatry episode, in which nothing is explicitly stated, but it might as well be. There is talk about Adam being a representative for “social issues,” choosing songs that were relevant to the “current social climate,” being friends with drag queens, and the photos of Adam making out with a man not being embarrassing. Bill O’Reilly censored the photos when he discussed them on his show, and Adam’s response was fantastic. He said,
“They censored it! It was censored! I was like, is that indecent? I wasn’t embarassed. I guess he was. Bill was embarassed.”

This doesn’t look like someone who’s hiding who he is, and there’s a rumor that he is going to officially come out on the cover of the next Rolling Stone. It should be his choice whether or not he comes out, but if he does, maybe it will finally shut everybody the hell up. And while it shouldn’t matter at all, the more people that come out and the more visibility is increased, the “gay question” will become less and less of an issue for people in the future. Once people can accept that gay people are normal and a part of society and just like everyone else, maybe they’ll finally just let us be like everybody else. You don’t see straight people being pressured to “come out” as heterosexual by every news source in the country. So why should gay people be treated any differently?
By the way, here’s a fun fact for you (that I noticed during the finale because I am a dork): The boots that Adam is wearing in this picture? He wore them during his performance with KISS in the finale. Also? The wings he is wearing are from the Bob Mackie showroom (he knows the drag queen that runs it).

Oh, and please let this be true. PLEASE.

I don't even get why people are making such a big deal out of it. I thought it was supposed to be a show about singing, not about who is what in terms of sexuality or ethnicity or whatever else people could find to gripe about. His sexuality doesn't matter at all. If he's talented, fine. If not, then also fine. I find this incredible fixation on his sexuality to be disturbing.
