Offensive? You’re Goddamn Right!

Margaret Cho is my idol. If I could meet anyone in the world, I would want to meet her. She has more balls, more sass, and more brains than I could ever hope to possess. Not only that, she stands up for those who are constantly put down in our society.

Her show, The Cho Show, premiered on VH1 this week. I cannot tell you how fucking excited I am. As I was reading Rich’s recap on the VH1 blog, I happened to see a comment that had been posted on the site. Now, normally, I do not respond to ignorance or comments like the following, but in this instance, I felt compelled to do so. My love and passion for what this woman does are so strong, that I felt I needed to say something in return (not that this bitch will get it, but still).

Here is “Courtney’s” comment (all spelling and grammar are clearly hers):
This is by far the worst show that VH1 has ever produced! This show is tasteless and offensive! I do not appreciate shows like this being broadcasted on this network. I was shocked to know that VH1 was behind this disgrase. I hope that the network decides to remove this rediculous show from the air!!!

And here is my reply (the quote I used at the end has been mentioned on this blog before, here. I cried the first time I heard her say that, and I feel like it epitomizes what she is all about and what she represents):
Oh, Courtney sweetie, you’re right. This is the WORST, most tasteless show ever “broadcasted” on this network. So much more “rediculous” than the amazing, non-offensive Rock of Herpes 7, Flavor of Gonorrhea 43, or I Lack Self-Respect that the network usually broadcasts. Those aren’t “rediculous,” offensive, or classless AT ALL.

God forbid they have a show featuring a brilliant, funny, groundbreaking woman who has been a role model and an icon to so many people. God forbid they feature a woman who fights for the rights of people who are oppressed in our society, and does it in a funny and smart way. Why would VH1 ever want to have a show about someone like that? I can’t even imagine.

“If you are a woman, if you are a person of color, if you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, if you are a person of size, if you are person of intelligence, if you are a person of integrity, then you are considered a minority in this world. And it’s going to be really hard for us to find messages of self-love and support anywhere…. If you don’t have self-esteem, you will hesitate to do anything in your life…. You will hesitate to report a rape. You will hesitate to defend yourself when you are discriminated against because of your race, your sexuality, your size, your gender. You will hesitate to vote; you will hesitate to dream. For us to have self-esteem is truly an act of revolution, and our revolution is long overdue.” -Margaret Cho, The Notorious C.H.O Tour

Thank you, Margaret Cho, for doing what you doing and being who you are. Continue offending people and racking up haters, because that is the only way the instigate change. The more uncomfortable you make someone, the deeper the nerve that you have hit. You are brilliant, and you have changed my life (and so many other lives, as well) more than you will ever fully comprehend.
