God’s Vagina

I have no clue what this means, and I’m unsure if it was meant as an insult or just someone being ridiculous, and I think it’s fairly awesome.

Also, according to Dogma and Dishwalla, God *did* have a vagina!

I win.

Given the name of this person and the hashtags, I’d say s/he was probably dead-serious and trying to tell you off for being such an uppity feminist.
There is no action below a fundamentalist christian patriot who knows where womans god-given place is.

A blasphemous film and a shoddy pop song? How about you read the BIBLE? Where our Lord is called the FATHER.

And if your father had a vagina, well, that says it all.

I’ve read the Bible. It says all sorts of things. It was also poorly translated and retranslated, and speaks, often, in allegory, parable, and metaphor. And contradicts itself. Often. And if you think the biblical God has literal gender in the sense that a human does, and thus has a penis, you’re an idiot in ways I can’t even start to hash out, including that you probably think Leviticus is SOOOO RIGHT about forbidding man on man sex, and then, super pleased with yourself, you go out and slurp down shrimp cocktail while wearing your poly blend T-shirt, and then go for some bacon-wrapped scallops while you’re at it.

      1. There are many fathers who happen to have vaginas.
      2. YOUR “lord” is not my (or anyone else’s) lord.
      3. You’re an idiot.

Wow. Really? I actually love Dogma.

*will never try satire online again*

I am aware this next bit will look like I’m a Christian pretending I’m not in order to show up hypocrisy, but that’s really not the case. I’m an agnostic who has no problem with religious people but am too cynical to believe any of that myself, but so cynical I think even science has it’s limits and failings.

So…on the other hand, on a serious note, why is it okay to rip into Christians but not okay for Christians to rip back into you?

“And if you think the biblical God has literal gender in the sense that a human does, and thus has a penis, you’re an idiot in ways I can’t even start to hash out”

Let them believe what they want to believe if it gives them faith in and hope for life. To be fair, some Christians DO believe God has a literal gender, but who are you to shun their beliefs and belittle them for it? That’s exactly the same as what the tweet was doing to Brit.

This misapprehension is a classic example of Poes Law.
        http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Poe%27s_Law

And on why people rip into christians (and other assorted religionists):
It’s because their views are actively harmful to a significant subset of the population (hint: especially those who happen to sport vaginas, prefer partners of the same sex, or similar “abominations” etc.).
Even the most moderate christian lends credibility to an organization that is pretty much based on vilification of human sexuality, the female gender and the active repression of basic human rights.
And more often than not, those who seem to be “really permissive” christians harbor at least some of the churchs fucked up views on who is allowed to fuck or marry whom and what a woman is not supposed to do.
Consult the various atheist blogs on the web, I recommend Pharyngula of PZ Myers for a starting point – at least for reading.
Coming to realize in how many ways religion undermines every society and basic human decency takes just as much time as the realization that we live in a patriarchy and how this hurts people daily.

(This is “God Really Is Love” commenting as my real name now – I’m a newbie really, so maybe the satire wasn’t the best intro…sorry!)

          “Even the most moderate christian…”

And a person that even buys 1 pack of condoms a year is increasing the need for plastic, which in turn feeds the corrupt oil industry.

Seriously, if you go deep into anything, you’re gonna find something bad in everything everyone does. Just let people be people and do their own thing and don’t belittle either way.

Sure, that person ripped into Brit, but is it any better or just to do the same to them? Because that’s “an eye for an eye”, so even making the argument that it’s okay to do it to them because they did it first is only saying their beliefs are even more valid.

That comparison is senseless, because the moderately religious have a massive impact on politics.

An example would be the bruhaha about gay marriage in germany (thats where I live). Compared to the US for example we have a serious absence of christofascist nutters. There is close to no godbothering in the political discourse. Still, it took literally years and a ruling by th Bundesverfassungsgericht (a court to uphold or constitution) to implement this no-brainer: that two consenting adults should be able to marry, regardless of gender, and be given the same rights(! thats the important part). At the moment, we are waiting for the final change in the law.
            Reading material in english: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recognition_of_same-sex_unions_in_Germany
Thats because for some reason, the moderates tend to (massively) care for and integrate the churchs views into their decisions on just such topics.

Similar problems arise with regard to abortion laws, stem cell research and a bunch of other topics.
And just a few days ago, a huuuuge thrift package was released. They cut into literally everything – except for certain businesses (thanks to one of our ruling parties…) and the churchs long-standing (we are talking about 200 years here) drain on german financial resources.
In germany, clerics get paid by the government, the church and its institutions is exempt from taxes and there is a special tax collected from church members (who often haven’t visited mass in years) to fund the church.

And now you come around and tell me its the same as buying a packet of condoms a year? Come on. And I haven’t even started to explain how condoms serve a fucking good purpose with regards to health.

No, I wasn’t saying all Christians are like condom-buyers. I was saying that a moderate Christian who holds no real ill will towards non-Christians is the same as buying condoms, because on the surface, they’re just a regular person going about their own lives without it affecting anyone. They have their own beliefs and practices, but it doesn’t feed back into their immediate circle of family, friends, aquaintances, co-workers, etc. It’s just something they do for themselves to make themselves happier people.

But if you are to look deeply into ANYTHING, and keep going and going further back in the chain, you will ALWAYS come across the notion that “They are keeping a bad industry/company/organisation/whatever going”. But thinking all Christians are bad people because there’s a few narrow-minded ones is as narrow-minded as the person who tweeted Brit.

The Roman Catholic Church has 1 BILLION followers alone. That’s more than 1/7 of the world’s population. That and the rest of Christianity makes up roughly a third of the world’s populatiion. If they really were ALL as evil and actively holding people living non-Christian lives back, the world wouldn’t be how it is today. We’d still be living as if we were in the middle ages.

Just because there’s a few bad eggs that make the organisation look bad doesn’t mean there’s not plenty more people who just use it for personal happiness while not hating on everyone else. Some people just need something to have faith in and Christianity (the belief system, not the organisations behind it) gives them this personal happiness. So, as I said, hating on all Christians just because there’s a few bad eggs is as narrow-minded as the few bad eggs themselves.

And actually actively going after them, calling ALL Christians out on their ‘corrupt’ lives (despite most not having done anything but believe in some deity and pray now and again while trying to live a good life) because it’s what ‘they’ (really just a small percentage) are doing to us? That’s retaliation, which is an eye for an eye, which was first famously documented in the bible. So even following this practice is validating to Christans that they have the right idea.

You really want to oppose Christianity? Let it go. Don’t use practices from the Bible if you hate it so much. Live your own good life in the way you want to and leave others to live their own good life, because most Christians have no ill will towards you (talking generally to everyone here, not just YOU) as a female, non-heterosexual, transgender, etc person.

Yes, there are a few bad eggs just as there are in every walk of life. But to hate on the whole organisation because of these relatively few people is as narrow-minded as being a racist, sexist, etc.

Exchange “christianity” for “patriarchy” and believers for men, and you’ve got same old, same old (actually, religion and the patriarchy intertwine a lot).
I was arguing pretty much the same stuff you argue now, because I couldn’t believe that somebodys personal belief would affect others if they kept it to themself. It took me about three years to learn that people are just being people and keeping your belief out of your interaction with others and society is nigh impossible.
People like PZ Myers at Pharyngula, the guys at friendlyatheist.com and others describe it way better than me. I’d refer you there.

There’s a wonderful musical called “Six Women With Brain Death–Or Expiring Minds Want to Know”. The final number is a gospel tune called “God is an Alien”. It is sofa. king. glorious.
