Please allow me to blow your mind for a second. The last preview for V Magazine‘s size issue has been released and OH. MY. GOD. It is gender fuckery at it’s finest. This shoot is fucking amazing.
I have nothing to add. It’s perfect.

My brain almsot exploded from all the awesomeness in this fashion spread. It's by far my favorite ever.
OK, "fashion" isn't my strong suit, but I don't even see any gender play at work in this series.
The men are buff and sleeveless, the women have the long hair and good eye makeup, are in heels, dresses, corsets, jewelry, an 80's sweatshirt, and necklaces. The epitome of gender stereotypes.
Except for the David Bowie rip-off in the 5th picture, all I see are some really really ugly outfits.
But then, again, fashion isn't my thing.
Advizor, are you kidding?
In the first picture, the woman has a very boyish look about her, and is wearing male identified clothes, with a boyish cut.
In the third picture, you have a woman (who may or may not be a guy, I can't tell, but the cheekbones are very strong) in masculine clothing, and on the right is a male in a wig, leggings, and heels.
In the fourth picture, the center woman is actually a man in drag.
The fifth picture has a male in the middle, in a skirt, heels, and stockings.
The sixth picture has a male in not very masculine clothing at all.
The seventh picture has two men, neither of which are traditionally masculine. The one on the left has a feminine bowl cut, while the one on the right has an updo.
Where is the gender fuckery absent, again?
#1 – A very boyish look? All it is is a short hair cut. Snooze…. Wasn't that done 5,000 times on ANTM?
#2 – Platinum blond in corset, heroin chic guy. Done to death during the 80's.
#3 – Middle woman in a pantsuit that is almost exactly like one my boss wears (woman) and long flowing hair. Not exactly groundbreaking. Red head in top hat might be a man, but the obscured face makes it irrelevant. It presents as a woman in a dress.
#4 – If the man/woman in the picture totally transforms to the other gender it just becomes good art. Unless it's presented as a "man in drag" there is no social or fashion commentary, just good cheekbones. Even accepting that it's a man the juxtaposition of him between two very traditional gender types negates any shock value, it's just a guy in drag. Cage a faux anyone? (If Robin Williams has done it, it's so past "over" that it's not even funny.
#5 – David Bowie, Dennis Rodman, Gene Hackman, Robin Williams, my brother…. zzzz zzzz zzzz and WTF is that outfit on the left?
#6 – Gay George Washington maybe? or is it John Cyer from the his early films
#7 – Not traditionally masculine? You must have missed the cubists, the mods, the rockers, the dancers, Madonna….
I guess that these images are just so cliche, so derivative of other movements and the old "shock" factors of 20-30 years ago.
I think GenderPlay has played itself out already. (Isn't that the name of a band?) You've got the gay black guy on America's Next Top Model who gives all cross dressers a bad name. Lady Gaga who pretends to be cutting edge while really just copying the avant garde of the 60's but doing it in latex.
These pictures are just another fashion director's attempt at being creative but demonstrating their complete lack of the same. When people try to hard to be "shocking" they just end up looking silly.
I realize that I have made two references to America's Next Top Model. I admit to having watched it a few times, in the early "pre-crazy" years for Tyra. But she is a PERFECT example of what I am trying to get at with this little rant. She tries so very very hard to be "fierce" and ends up just being awful. I will put money on the line that the photographer behind these shots owns every episode of ANTM on DVD.
I love V and everything thing that has todo with V and those that support V. I can't wait to read the whole thing start to finish it's going to be incredible, thanks for posting this.
