TWG sent me the link to these pieces by Gerda Wegener (1889-1940). She married a man that eventually had the first sex reassignment surgery and she supported her partner through her transition. These pieces are groundbreaking and totally ahead of their time and I think they are absolutely beautiful.
I like that this one shows a woman actually examining her vagina in the mirror, as so many women of the time were not taught to know their own anatomy and it was thought of as dirty.
This one is very interesting, as it shows a woman having sex with a (what is the name of the half man/half horse thing? I don’t feel like Googling it). Not only is her partner not human, he is not white, either.
A movie is being made about Gerda and her onetime partner, Lili Elbe. It will star Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman.

The last slide is a woman having sex with Pan, a Greek god who, among other things, is linked with fertility. For more art like this, and many other styles, you should check out the World Erotic Art Museum in Miami Beach.
Ah, damn Spice beat me to it…
If you ever read Tom Robbins' "Jitterbug Perfume" there is a whole lot of Pan getting it on with imps and women. It's really raunchy (it IS a Tom Robbins book afterall…) but super interesting in some weird way.
my word verification is "Jesse"…
These would make bad ass pendants for necklaces (or even coasters).
beautiful artwork. i don't think any of it was ahead of any time though; i think art flows from an artist and if society can't accept it during their lifetime then it'll be showcased in another lifetime. i'm glad our generation can showcase these already. i would've hated not to be a part of this!
i'm gonna keep tabs on the movie. i'm excited!
I dunno, the *only* non-white depicted as half-animal is slightly disturbing to me–but I guess it's of the times.
The last one makes me smile. I have a very frisky, devilish playmate who I always think of as a modern-day Satyr.
Wow. If Beardsly had got it on with Charles Dana Gibson and Arthur Rackham, that's what might have resulted. Those are awesome. I love it.
