Happy

Going back through my blog in the recent months, I notice how bitter and angry and ranty I’ve gotten. And that’s a huge part of who I am: bitter and angry and ranty. But I think that comes from being a passionate person, and I don’t want to give those things up. However, once upon a time, I was funny. I don’t know how many of you were around then, but I used to be funny. Really and truly funny. I found the humor in everything and in nothing, and could turn every day occurrences into blogable stories.

My goal was to post something happy and lighthearted today, to bring some joy to this blog that’s been dour and sour lately. And I could think of nothing. And then, I got a nasty comment on my Formspring, and I cried. I usually have really thick skin, but every now and then, I crack. And this was the comment that broke me. And then I really couldn’t think of anything happy to post. So I took a bubble bath, lined up my toys to wait for Daddy’s arrival home from work, and thought about what makes me happy.

What does happiness look like to me? If I can’t find happiness in my words at the moment, then maybe I can find happiness in pictures.

Happiness is inappropriate dishes.

Happiness is a shelf full of Palahniuk.

Happiness is a girl in a bowtie.

Happiness is gay marriage.

Happiness is adipositivity.

Happiness is pregnant men.

Happiness is puppies.

Happiness is rock candy.

Happiness is pretty butt plugs.

Happiness is outdoor seating.

Happiness is Liberty of London for Target.

Happiness is floral glasses.

Happiness is awesome brides.

Happiness is watermelon mimosas.

Happiness is pretty dresses.

What does happiness look like to you?

I’ve never understood how people can say nasty shit like that. I like your happy list. It may be time for me to give some thought to such a list.

I’m glad you’re enjoying your time with P.

Oh maybe I’ll do one tomorrow too. My blog could some happiness (I’m still gonna look for some plates that I can do that to whenever I get to a thrift store). And I agree with Epiphora. I reblog every kitten picture I come across on tumblr. I want a cat so bad but Ryan hates them (plus we already have a dog, a ferret, and our monster Holden).

What a great list! Since you asked, here’s what happiness is to me:

It’s an old couple holding hands through the grocery store.

It’s a cute baby that smiles at you right when you make eye contact with the baby.

It’s the first sight of flowers of Spring.

It’s my sons smile and wave at me when I pull up to pick him up from school.

It’s that first kiss I get from my bf when I get home from a long day at work.

It’s that first sip of wine after a long day at work.

It’s watching my son sleep for a few minutes in the morning before I wake him up.

    It’s nice patients at work.

It’s pregnant people. I can’t help but smile when I look at them.

    It’s long drives alone.

    It’s helping a stranger.

It’s that feeling when I step out of the shower.

It’s waking up on a Saturday or Sunday and realizing I don’t have to go to work.

Long hot summer days, laughing with my friends until my sides ache, my dog, my cat, girls with short hair, seeing elderly couples holding hands, wearing ribbons in my hair, random acts of kindness, dancing in the rain and good conversations over a mug of hot chocolate.

First off I don’t comment nearly enough on your blog. I enjoy reading it soo much I need to tell you more.
Second, I totally agree, not that you are ranty and bitchy, but that I am the same way. I have read back different portions of my blog thoughout the months and I always read myself back as being the BIGGEST Complainer on Earth. I don’t know how anyone reads my blog sometimes. LOL. The funny thing is when you write about something at the time it doesn’t seem bitchy or complainy at all. It is getting that emotion off your sleeve and out there instead of tucking it away somewhere deep inside yourself to fester and do harm down the road. So I say keep up the bitching and moaning!! Let us have it!!!

i think i will be following the leader on this one, but for now, on this almost spring day, happiness looks like my husband.

    haven’t seen him in ages.

    Hey Kindred Spirit,

Way to fight the good fight! It can be so hard to find the Happy in our lives. I’m trying, too, and it helps to know we’re not alone.

Having internet friends we never would have known in Real Life makes me happy. :) Knowing one day we may share a drink in Chicago also makes me happy!

    xo

    GREAT POST!

I hope we have many more like it.

I’d definitely noticed a more negative tone to your posts and I think this is a great step in the right direction. Ultimately, as Abraham Lincoln said, we’re as happy or sad as we choose to be.

Obviously, that’s not entirely true; but it’s got a grain of truth to it and it seems like you’ve taken that grain, planted it and we’re all going to benefit from whatever blossoms forth.

Good for you; best blog post I’ve read this week.

Lying naked in bed tucked into the crook of Ruf’s arm, with my cheek on his hairy chest, watching the stubbly walnut of his chin as he tells me he loves me. Happiness and heaven all rolled into one.
