Incorrect Pronunciation

I have started my training for my upcoming internship at the battered women’s shelter. While the information they provided was good (and the only reason none of it is new to me is that I was a women’s studies minor in undergrad and have taken many psych courses that touch on issues of abuse), the woman facilitating the training sessions might want to go back and revisit her SAT vocabulary words. She read right from the slides provided, but didn’t seem to know what a lot of the words meant. Over the course of the first 4 hour session:

  • “Masochistic” was pronounced “mase-oh-chis-tic” (and yes, she pronounced the “ch” like “cheese”)
  • “Defined” was pronounced “def-in-ed”
  • “Tacitly” was pronounced (more than once) “tact-ick-ly”
  • “Ageism” was pronounced “age-ee-ism”
Yes, English was most definitely her first language. And while I don’t fault her for maybe not having the same kind of education that I do, you would think that the person they send in to facilitate the training would be one of their more formally educated employees. It was painful and I had to bite my tongue not to correct her. Sigh.
