Rich over at fourfour posted an amazingly powerful video regarding all of the homophobia that has graced the media this week. Watch it. Seriously.

About halfway through this video, I started crying. Watching Rich (who is gay, if you did not figure that out) sit amongst the deluge of hatred was truly profound. It was like watching the stuff be said to his face. Hearing someone talk about how their “morals” give them the right to tell people who they can love and to take rights away from people makes me want to shake them and tell them how fucked up their morals really are.

Morals are supposed to be things that you hold true that help you be a good person and do what is right. Discriminating against people, putting people down, and investing so much energy into hating other people will never make you morally upstanding. It makes you an ignorant, hurtful fuck.

These people cannot imagine how devastating it is to have people dedicate their lives and energy to creating laws that say that what you do, how you feel, the way you live your life, and the way you were born is wrong. It is so hard to hear people make statements like the ones in the video above. When I hear those things, I hear that I don’t deserve the same rights as them. My friends don’t deserve the same rights as them.

Because we love people of the same sex, we don’t deserve to be married. We don’t deserve to have a family. We don’t deserve to live happy and productive lives. Let me tell you something. EVERYBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO LIVE A HAPPY AND PRODUCTIVE LIFE.

Hating others and passing judgement on those who are different from you don’t make you good a good person. It makes you the opposite of a good person. And if you sit there and think that because you go to church every Sunday and read the bible and do what “the Lord” tells you that you are going to be saved, and that you are up on some moral high horse, you are sadly mistaken. Because, I may not know your Lord the way that you do, but I’m willing to bet my life that He doesn’t tell you to spend your time and energy trying to destroy the lives and take away the rights of innocent people.

Innocent people that don’t tell you how to live your life. Innocent people that don’t spend their time and energy trying to destroy you. No, instead, they have to spend their time and energy trying to prove to you that they deserve the same kind of life that you have. Human beings all deserve to love and to be loved.

Do you know who the morally upstanding ones are? They aren’t the bible thumpers trying to bring down the rights of people who are different from them. They are the ones who have the courage to live their lives they way that makes them happy. The ones that have the courage to love who they love, to bring needy children into their homes and raise them as their own. The ones that have the courage to stand up and be proud of who they are, regardless of how much discrimination they face.

Live your life the way you want, but don’t tell someone else how to live theirs. All humans deserve love, happiness, and respect regardless of who they are or what they do. End of story.
