Jesus (who grew up in New Hampshire and Boston): “Okay, I’m trying to grasp this. So you didn’t have, like, Revolutionary War history field trips when you were in school? That’s just so… weird.”
Me: “Well, seeing as Fort Lauderdale was founded in 1911, I’m going to let you figure that one out on your own.”
I did go sloshing through the Everglades, though.

I was shocked when I went to college in the midwest and I learned that other parts of the country didn’t get Patriot’s Day off or spend an entire half-year in elementary school studying the Revolutionary War.
Boston’s a pretty awesome place to grow up.
Some of my fondest memories of growing up in Boston include exploring colonial-era graveyards and participating in a Patriot’s Day parade.
Growing up in California meant Wild West and Gold Rush-themed field trips. We went to the Railroad Museum in Sacramento, and Sutter’s Fort. The Revolution? Sooo far away!
I grew up in Florida, too. So I completely understand where you’re coming from. I remember wading in marshy waters up to my waist during a field trip. Revolutionary War field trips sound so much better.
