On of my friends, a biology grad student, is allergic to latex as well. She told the lab tech in charge of reordering materials that she needed small nitrile gloves, which are slightly more expensive- but not by much. The lab tech refused and said my friend was exaggerating. So my friend put on a latex glove for 5 minutes, removed it and showed the hand – all swollen and full of blisters-, and told the tech to STFU and order the goddamn gloves. The tech did order the nitrile ones, but I seriously would have wanted to strangle her for her stupidity.

I’m not sure if you’re kidding or not when you say the Latex Allergy Awareness Week is “highly unnecessary.” If it helps people understand their bodies, have less pain, and have more happy sex, it seems like a really good thing to me.

My sister in law has the allergy but almost right away she was breaking out in horrible itchy blisters that literally looked like herpes, scared the hell out of her. Because, as you say, the allergy gets worse–they’ve had to put a huge warning on her medical files so it pops up on the computer in any hospital where her info is accessed–latex gloves now give her an almost deadly reaction.

More than 50% of the population is allergic to spermicide. It's really bad stuff, and is in the process of being taken off the market. It's no more effective than using a condom correctly, opens small tears in the vaginal lining making it easier to contract STDs, and breaks down cell walls making it more difficult to get pregnant when you actually want it. It's evil.

I sympathize with you, as I think I know what you’ve gone through– I have an allergy to spermicide, which took a long (painful) time to figure out as well.

I have a friend with a latex allergy and it’s a serious business. As you probably noticed, it gets worse the more exposure happens. What’s worse for her, she’s proudly and openly non-monogamous. The result of that is that she always carries around her own brand of non-latex condom and – you can probably guess this next bit – this results in countless occasions when she’s accused of being ‘slutty’ for bringing condoms with her.

(The irony being the ‘non slutty’ girls who *don’t* carry condoms end up having just as much sex, just using the ones the boys or the lady’s room vending machine provide.)
